Department of Transportation Pedestrian Map

Challenge Solution Impact
The Bridges Division of the NYC DOT sought to either renovate or remove the 21st St bridge, and Pedestrians Projects Group (PPG) is aiming to make the Midtown Tunnel 21st St ramp a protected space.
The Street Ambassadors deployed to 21st St between 49th and 50th Ave to gather information from people using the 21st St bridge and Midtown Tunnel 21st St ramp using the map activity below.
With ArcGIS, Illustrator, and After Effects, I visualized 46 routes to reveal that 86% of respondents use the bridge, mostly en route to Hunters Point Ave subway. If the bridge wasn’t an option, respondents would walk to Vernon Blvd-Jackson Ave subway station instead.
